Slovakia - TV Markíza

Throughout 2009 TV Markíza continued to support a variety of foundations and charities aimed at improving the lives of those less fortunate in the Slovak Republic. During the year, the channel aired several specially dedicated programs to generate charitable awareness and raise money for a variety of goodwill projects.

The Markiza Foundation was created in 2007 to fulfil the purpose of assisting and supporting health care facilities, social institutions and children’s homes It also works with underprivileged families and individuals to support education and sport for young people.

Historically TV Markiza has been involved in numerous social awareness campaigns with charities and foundations, by increasing individual donations, providing media promotion involved with its programming, and helping with causes such as; Children of Slovakia Foundation, UNICEF, Sunshine Center, UNHCR (Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees), League against Cancer, and the League for Mental Health.

Programming with a strong social context forms an important part of TV Markiza's contribution to the community. On the show "Bailando", TV Markiza gave participants the opportunity to fulfill their dreams by dancing with famous celebrities. On a special charity edition of the show, participants were the relatives and friends of people suffering from illnesses, handicaps or unfortunate social situations. By taking part in the show, participants were able to raise over 100 935 EUR and awareness to help support their loved one. Viewers donated via SMS messaging and the money raised was divided so as to fulfill the dreams of the competitors. The results of this project included the purchase of a wheelchair for a disabled person and financial resources needed for a non-cosmetic plastic surgery operation.

In 2009, family show Modré z neba (Blue Heaven) answered the dreams of ordinary members of the public, especially by supporting those from the socially and economically weaker segments of society and those with disabilities. The magazine show Reflex, focuses on real life stories which are interesting, touching and sometimes shocking. Some viewers have been so touched by the program that they have donated time and money to support the people who have shared their stories.
